This lecture explores the events surrounding the truce of 11 July 1922 that brought an end to the Irish War of Independence between the IRA and the crown forces. The truce was viewed by many republicans as merely a temporary measure, and some did not believe that the ceasefire would hold and that the war with the crown forces would resume on an even greater scale. This lecture examines the events surrounding the truce on both a local and national level and how ordinary fighters and communities in County Galway perceived the end of the republican campaign.

This lecture has been organised by Galway County Council. It is funded by the Commemorations Unit, Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media under the Community Strand of the Decade of Centenaries programme and Galway County Council. It is an action of Galway County Council’s Decade of Commemoration Strategy 2013-2023
