On 26-27 September the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht organised a conference in Listowel, Co. Kerry, on the theme ‘A decade of commemoration, 1913-1923: The role of local authorities’. This conference, the latest in the series of public consultations relating to the Decade of Centenaries, was organised to highlight the range of commemorative initiatives being organised by the department, and how local authorities might engage with these initiatives. Opening the conference, Jimmy Deenihan TD, Minister for Arts, Heritage, and the Gaeltacht, spoke of the need for the commemorative initiatives to be undertaken in a manner that was inclusive, and respectful of various traditions.
The conference was addressed by members of the Expert Group on Commemoration, along with representatives of the Military Archives Pension Project, Century Ireland, and others.
