4 September 2014: Launch of ‘Centenary Mayo’ website, Castlebar, Co. Mayo
On Thursday 4 September Heather Humphreys, Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, launched the website ‘Centenary Mayo’ (www.centenarymayo.ie) in Mayo County Library, Castlebar, Co. Mayo.
The new website has been developed by Mayo Library and Heritage Office to commemorate the Decade of Centenaries (1913 to 1923) as it relates to County Mayo. It incorporates a general introduction to the period; a timeline of events; biographies of key Mayo figures from the period; image galleries; a map indicating the locations of specific events, along with the locations of commemorative monuments or plaques; lists of the dead; contemporary articles and images from local newspapers; and links to major national and local sources on the period. A number of academics have been commissioned to write essays on some of the major events such as World War One and the War of Independence, along with other key themes, such as the social life of the time. The site itself was created by M.Sc students at NUI Galway.
