13 April 2017: Lecture: ‘The first anniversary of the Easter Rising’, GPO Witness History, Dublin 2

On Thursday 13 April 2017 Roisín Higgins (Teeside) present a lecture entitled ‘The first anniversary of the Easter Rising’ at GPO Witness History, as part of a series exploring the aftermath of the Easter Rising of 1916.n Easter Monday 1917, Helena Molony, Jinny Shanahan and Winnie Carney decided to have a ‘demonstration to commemorate the rebellion’. They made a replica of the Proclamation and had a tricolor raised onto a large flagstaff at the GPO, attracting a jubilant and somewhat unruly crowd. They had, in Molony’s words, ‘established the 1916 commemoration’. The lecture will explore how this established a choreography for all subsequent commemorations.

The lecture and discussion were held in the Witness Gallery.
