On 10-12 September 2013 Cardiff University hosted a major international conference. organised by the Wales-Ireland Research Network, on ‘Ireland, Wales ad the First World War’. The conference sought to explore and compare the Irish and Welsh experiences of the First World War. The conference opened with a plenary lecture by the Irish ambassador to the United Kingdom, Daniel Mulhall, on the lives of the academic and poet Thomas Kettle (1880-1916), and the poet Francis Ledwidge (1887-1917), who are perhaps the best-known Irish casualties of the First World War.
