10 July 2016: Day of commemoration to mark battle of the Somme, Castlebar, Co. Mayo

On Sunday 10 July 2016 the Mayo Peace Park committee hosted a day of commemoration for Mayo area in the Mayo Peace Park, Castlebar, from 12pm. This remembrance ceremony acknowledged all wars and conflicts, with a special focus on the centenary of the Battle of the Somme, in which numerous Mayo-born soldiers lost their lives. The Defence Forces provided a colour party for the occasion, and the event consisted of prayers, poetry reading, and a formal wreath laying; the Last Post was sounded.  There were also a number of musical performances. The guest speaker was Kevin Myers.
